The port of Koper, located in Slovenia, has gained much attention in recent years as a thriving centre for international trade. This vibrant port is the gateway to Central and Eastern Europe, connecting the Mediterranean to the rest of the world. With its strategic location and modern facilities, the Slovenian Port of Kopra has become an interesting alternative for European businesses. Transport times, from some destinations, are much faster to the port of Kopra than to our home town of Gdansk. For this reason, it is worth taking an interest in this option.

Is transport through Koper cost-effective?

Due to its sacred location in Europe, the port of Luka Koper is a window for the transport of goods to central and eastern Europe. Due to the shorter route to be travelled, transport times are not only faster, but can also be cheaper. It is often the case that services from many locations in this shipments from China are at lower prices than freight going to Hamburg or Gdansk. In this case, however, a more expensive container return must be added than in the case of, for example, Gdansk. When transporting a container from Koper to Poland, it is worthwhile to use the transhipment to rail transportwhich has a very good infrastructure in the region.

What is the distance between the port of Koper and Poland?

 The distance between the port of Koper and Poland is approximately 800-900 kilometres to the border. This is a relatively short distance, especially compared to other European ports.

 The favourable location of the port of Koper as a gateway to Central and Eastern Europe provides access to developed transport networks and strategic transport routes.

Distance from the port of Copra to individual cities:

Warsaw --> 1149 km

Krakow --> 945 km

Wrocław --> 1012 km

Prague --> 811 km

Budapest --> 568 km

Benefits of using maritime transport to the port of Koper

The port of Kopra also has a well-developed road and intermodal infrastructure. Containers from the port of Kopra can further be transshipped onto semi-trailers or trains, from where they will continue on to other European countries such as Poland. This is the largest port investment in the Adriatic Sea. In 2022, the port of Koper handled 1.2 MLN TEUs which is quite a large volume for such a small country as Slovenia with a population of 2.112 MLN.

In addition to good infrastructure, it is worth noting the much faster time transit time from many parts of the world. In the case of the service to Israel, for example, the service to Copru is 21 days faster than the one to Gdansk. Even taking into account the farther distance of the container removal, a great deal of time is gained here.

On which destinations is it worth considering using delivery through the port of Koper and how long is the transit time?

Depending on your location and cargo specifications, you may want to consider using the port of Koper for delivery in different directions. The port of Koper is strategically located on the Adriatic Sea, making it a convenient entry point to central and south-eastern Europe. Shipments heading to the Balkans, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia or Poland can benefit from convenient road and rail connections from the port of Koper. Transit times depend on the specific route and distance, but thanks to the well-developed transport infrastructure, delivery times can be reduced compared to other seaports in the region.
